R.I.P.

The first lady of crop art, Lillian Colton, has died. She did a ton of portraits in crop, which were featured prominently at the Minnesota State Fair every year. Dig her Prince:

Perhaps you've already explored the crop art link at right, but if not, you should behold the wonder that is Alan Carpenter's "Triptych. And check out these tours de force:

This is the one hanging in my house.

Every year, I hope for a continuation of "Vices of the First Ladies." Oh Alan Carpenter, why do you toy with me?

I'm so glad you posted this. Look for the new MHS Press book coming this fall--SEED QUEEN: The Story of Crop Art and the Amazing Lillian Colton by Colleen Sheehy. We're so sorry Colton didn't live to see it published.

and, p.s., thanks for the link. Look for some reciprocity soon. . . .

I've become quite enamored with the work of Laura Melnick. Her gentle political commentary with well-known children's book characters simultaneously warms my heart and tickles my overly cultivated cynical side. I hope Ms. Colton's spirit rests a little more easily with the knowledge that there are a number of interesting people carrying on her tradition...

I like Melnick's stuff, too, hammersox. Thanks for commenting.

Night Editor: I'm so excited for Seed Queen now. Thanks for the info.

Did you read the obit in The People's Press? I like here line in reference to art interpretation speech "And I thought I just glued seeds" or something like that. Impressive fair attendence record too.
